Investor relations community gathers in New York for the 18th IR Magazine Awards – US
Covidien has won the grand prix for best overall IR – large cap for the third consecutive year at the IR Magazine Awards – US 2013. The medical equipment maker also picked up best IRO – large cap for Cole Lannum, again for the third year in a row.
Covidien and Intel both received an impressive eight nominations, while Danaher garnered seven, so competition among this trio was fierce. But Covidien pulled through to retain the night’s big large-cap prizes.
The awards, hosted by Ali Velshi, chief business correspondent at CNN, saw hundreds of members of the IR community gather at Cipriani Wall Street in New York.
Now in their 18th year, the IR Magazine Awards – US are based on in-depth research that seeks to identify the best corporate IR teams. This year, IR Magazine canvassed the opinions – through electronic surveys and telephone interviews – of more than 800 sell-side analysts, buy-side analysts and portfolio managers across the US.
‘With its consistency and helpful approach, Covidien has led the way in IR for some time,’ commented one sell-side respondent to the awards research.
Despite being pipped to the grand prix, Intel still had plenty to cheer after taking home the gongs for best financial reporting, best investment community meetings, best corporate governance and the sector award for best technology company – large cap.
In the mid-cap category, Broadcom claimed the grand prix for best overall IR for the second consecutive year, seeing off competition from Kansas City Southern, Limited Brands and Wyndham Worldwide.
Broadcom was praised for its ‘insightful meetings’ and delivering ‘good disclosure in its reporting, timely updates and a consistent, clear message,’ by a sell-side analyst.
In the small-cap category, ViroPharma beat Jack in the Box, US Airways Group and Old National Bancorp to take the grand prix for best overall IR.
ViroPharma, which also won best IRO – small cap for Bob Doody and Will Roberts, received this praise from one survey respondent: ‘ViroPharma’s management and IR consistently offer transparency and clarity to investors.’
