Hudson’s Bay names new IRO

Winner of 2014 award for best IPO poaches Shoppers Drug Mart’s head of investor relations

John Caplice has joined Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) to serve as senior vice president of treasury and investor relations. He succeeds the firm’s IRO of almost three years, Lucas Evans, who has been promoted to senior vice president of corporate development.

A chartered accountant and business graduate of St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Caplice is an IR veteran of the Canadian retail world. He joins the Toronto-listed firm from Shoppers Drug Mart, the country’s largest drugstore chain ‘with annual sales in excess of $11 bn’, where he was responsible for treasury and IR for the past 14 years. Prior to this, he was a treasurer at NetStar Communications, now part of CTVglobemedia.

‘We are pleased to welcome John to HBC during this very exciting time for the company,’ says Richard Baker, HBC’s CEO, in a company press release. ‘With his strong track record of success and experience in the retail sector, he will be an integral part of our senior management team as we continue to expand in North America and drive forward our goals for continued growth and innovation.’

HBC went public in November 2012, gaining recognition for its communications strategy around the operation with this year’s IR Magazine Award for best IR for an IPO. The retailer, founded in 1670 and one of the oldest companies in North America, also owns the upmarket department store chains Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as home decor superstore Home Outfitters.
