New head of IR at MetLife

New York-based life insurance group hires insurance sector research veteran Edward Spehar

Life insurance giant MetLife has appointed Edward Spehar as head of investor relations. He will join the firm at the end of the year, replacing John McCallion who is moving on to serve as CFO for the company’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region. Spehar will report to executive vice president and CFO John Hele who joined the company last July.

A chartered financial analyst, Spehar earned both a bachelor’s degree in management from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA from the same university’s Weatherhead School of Management.

He joins MetLife from Bank of America Merrill Lynch where he had been working for the past 19 years as an equity analyst covering life insurance companies, including MetLife. Prior to this he was an equity analyst at Lehman Brothers and Ameritrust.

Commenting on the appointment in a press release, Hele says: ‘With more than 20 years of experience analyzing insurance companies with broad and diverse businesses, Ed will be extremely valuable to MetLife and our shareholders. He has a deep understanding of the intricacies of how insurers operate and, equally important, a great ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders. I’m excited to have him join us.’

MetLife is the largest life insurer in the US, serving 90 of the largest Fortune 500 companies and more than 90 mn customers in more than 60 countries.
