SingTel and StarHub lead short lists for IR Magazine Awards ‒ South East Asia 2013

Singaporean companies dominate nominations for top regional IR honors

  • SingTel and StarHub each short-listed in seven award categories
  • CapitaLand makes short list spot in six categories
  • Five nominations apiece for Ascendas REIT and DBS Group
  • Three companies from the Philippines – Ayala Land, Metro Pacific Investments and PLDT – short-listed in four categories
  • Winners to be announced on December 10 in awards ceremony in Singapore

Telecoms companies Singtel and StarHub lead the short lists for the IR Magazine Awards – South East Asia 2013 with seven nominations each. This annual event ‒ now in its ninth year ‒ honors the leading exponents of investor relations in the region and takes place this year at the M Hotel in Singapore on Tuesday, December 10. For full short lists, please see below.

Singapore telecommunications rivals SingTel and StarHub share the top honors in terms of numbers of appearances on this year’s South East Asia short lists. Both companies have secured seven nominations, the same number they were both short-listed for in 2012.

SingTel has enjoyed the greater success in recent years, winning the grand prix for best overall IR at last year’s awards and securing top spot in the South East Asia Top 25 ranking. StarHub still finished fourth in 2012, however, with the firm’s Jeannie Ong winning an individual award for best IRO.

This year, fellow Singaporean company and real estate specialist CapitaLand is close behind the telecoms rivals, with a presence on six short lists, but down two nominations on last year, when it finished third in the regional rankings.

Along with DBS Group – itself listed in five award categories – CapitaLand will challenge StarHub and SingTel for the South East Asia large-cap grand prix for best overall investor relations on December 10.

Ascendas REIT, meanwhile, matches DBS Group’s haul of five nominations – a considerable achievement given that it wasn’t short-listed for a single award last year.

Last year just six non-Singaporean companies appeared on the South East Asia short lists, excluding the best in country award categories; this year, they number 17, including several companies from Thailand and the Philippines.

Three companies from the latter have each been short-listed four times in 2013: PLDT – which finished 16th in the South East Asia rankings in 2012 – Ayala Land and Metro Pacific Investments.

All three companies have improved on last year’s showing, with PLDT doubling its two nominations, and Metro Pacific Investments and Ayala Land featuring for the first time ever on the South East Asia short lists.

Ascendas REIT is also on the short list for the grand prix for best overall IR by a small or mid-cap company, along with PLDT, Ayala Land and Thai company Thaioil Group.

None of these appeared on any short lists for the 2012 awards. Thaioil Group, currently ranked 39th in the South East Asia standings, is up for three awards in total.

Other firms demonstrating a notable improvement in the number of short lists on which they appear include Thailand’s Kasikornbank, which appears on three short lists this year compared with just one last year.

The IR Magazine Awards – South East Asia 2013 are decided solely by an independent survey of investors and analysts, all of who are located in the region.

Just like in IR Magazine’s other awards in Europe and the Americas, investors and analysts are asked to vote for their favorite company in each award category. This year, 370 respondents took part in the survey. The four or five companies with the most votes in each category make the short list and the company with the most votes wins the award.

Votes for the awards also determine the IR Magazine South East Asia Top 25, the rankings of the best IR companies in the region. The votes in each award category are added together and the company with the most votes is declared the number one ranked company in the area.

The latest rankings will be revealed in the IR Magazine Investor Perception Study ‒ Asia 2013/2014, which will be published soon after the IR Magazine Awards & Conference – South East Asia 2013 on December 10 in Singapore.
