Four technology and telecoms companies, headed by China Telecom, will compete for top regional IR honors
- China Telecom nominated in 10 categories
- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company named on eight short lists, followed closely by Lenovo on seven and Delta Electronics on six
- Former top performer PetroChina secures a single nomination
- Winners will be announced on December 5 at awards ceremony in Hong Kong
China Telecom features on 10 short lists out of a possible 12 for the upcoming IR Magazine Awards – Greater China 2013. The Chinese telecommunications company will still have to see off stiff competition from Greater China at the annual event – now in its 13th year – which recognizes the best investor relations in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
This year’s awards and conference take place on December 5 at the Conrad Hong Kong. For full short lists, please see below.
Last year’s Greater China Top 30 first-placed company China Telecom – which in 2012 won an award for each of the six categories in which it was nominated – returns this year to appear on a record number of short lists.
The feat is all the more remarkable when considering the company appeared on only one short list for the 2011 awards.
The team at China Telecom will be hoping to maintain its winning ways despite a strong showing from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which led the short lists in 2012.
Though TSMC’s eight nominations in 2013 are one fewer than last year, its IR team will be aiming to replicate its 2012 successes.
PetroChina has made it onto just one short list this year, but fellow Chinese firm Lenovo will have high hopes after being named in seven separate categories.
The technology firm will do battle with Taiwanese rivals Delta Electronics, which has secured six nominations. Delta has been named in fewer categories than its Chinese counterpart but it did achieve a third-place finish in the rankings last year compared with Lenovo’s sixth.
All four of the top-nominated firms will do battle for the grand prix for best IR among large-cap companies, as well as for the title of best firm in the technology and telecommunications sector.
Hot on the heels of the top four comes a trio of companies, each of which is short-listed in four categories. Two are among the top four short-listed Hong Kong-based companies – China Resources Enterprise (CRE) and Hang Lung Properties.
CRE will aim to replicate its success from 2012, when the large-cap company finished in fifth place in the Greater China Top 30 and won three awards. Hang Lung, meanwhile, improves on its single nomination from last year after being short-listed in four categories, including for the best firm in the real estate sector.
Telecommunications firm – and awards newcomer – Far EastOne has also been named on the short list in four categories, including for the best IR by a Taiwanese company, a category it will contest with TSMC and Delta.
The IR Magazine Awards – Greater China 2013 are decided solely by an independent survey of investors and analysts, all of who are located in the region. Just like in IR Magazine’s other awards in Europe and the Americas, investors and analysts are asked to vote for their favorite company in each awards category.
This year, 370 respondents took part in the survey. The four or five companies with the most votes in each category make the short list and the company with the most votes wins the award.
Votes for the awards also determine the IR Magazine Greater China Top 30, the rankings of the best companies for IR in the region. The votes in each award category are added together and the company with the most votes is declared the number one ranked company in the area.
The latest rankings will be revealed in the IR Magazine Investor Perception Study – Asia 2013/2014, which will be published soon after the IR Magazine Awards & Conference – Greater China 2013 on December 5.
