During a year when so much changed, many of the best-in-class IR teams have stayed the same, with companies such as CN, Agnico Eagle Mines and ARC Resources picking up the highest number of nominations for the IR Magazine Awards – Canada 2021.
CN is nominated this year for six awards, bettering its total of four nominations at the 2020 awards. The company is in contention for best overall investor relations (large cap), best corporate governance & disclosure, best IR by a Canadian company in the US market and best in sector – industrials. In addition, Paul Butcher is nominated for best investor relations officer (large cap), while Ghislain Houle and Jean-Jacques Ruest are nominated for best IR by a senior management team (large cap).
Aecon, Agnico Eagle Mines, ARC Resources, Canadian Pacific Railway and Suncor Energy are all used to picking up nominations and have five each this year.
But alongside some of the more established names, there are also some new entrants in the mix. Lundin Mining Corporation, Hudbay Minerals and Parkland Corporation lead the pack of newcomers, with four nominations each.
This year’s award ceremony will take place on April 8 and will be the second IR Magazine Awards event in Canada to be held virtually.
In total, 27 awards will be presented with two different methodologies. The winners of the 19 award-by-research categories are selected based on an independent survey of the investment community, while the eight winners of the award-by-nomination categories are selected by a judging panel based on entries from or on behalf of IR teams.
This year’s judges are:
- Ben Ashwell, editor, IR Magazine and Corporate Secretary
- Janet Craig, executive director of investor relations at Deloitte
- Lorne Gorber, former executive vice president of investor and public relations at CGI
- Colleen Johnston, former CFO of TD Bank and current board director at Shopify, McCain Foods, Q4, Blue Shield of California and Private Debt Partners.
