Corporate snapshots: China Telecom

Interview with Lisa Lai, senior manager of investor relations

Over the past two years, China Telecom has undergone a strategic transformation and ramped up its IR program accordingly. In the past 12 months the company has conducted around 200 investor meetings, including one-on-ones, group meetings, results and broker conferences, reaching more than 1,000 analysts and investors worldwide.

China Telecom’s IR department has already had a successful year, winning in a record seven categories at the International ARC Awards for its 2009 annual report. Lisa Lai, senior manager of investor relations, attributes the firm’s success to the experience of both the senior management and the IR team, and the importance they place on remaining accessible and responsive to analysts and investors.

‘In practice, we uphold the importance of transparency and ensure effective disclosure and communications of the material development of the company,’ she explains.

Given the profound shifts occurring in telecommunications, one of China Telecom’s greatest challenges this year has been to convey the long-term and short-term implications of these changes to investors, gaining their confidence and support during this transitional phase.

Looking ahead, China Telecom’s IR strategy will focus on reinforcing the trust of the investment community by underlining its dedication to transparent, timely and comprehensive communication.
