Iberdrola stays on top at the IR Magazine Awards – Europe 2019

Spanish utility takes three trophies as awards go to an array of companies

Iberdrola has taken home three awards from the IR Magazine Awards – Europe 2019, including two of the night’s most coveted trophies: best overall IR and best investor relations officer for Ignacio Cuenca and Diego Morón (both in the large-cap category). The Bilbao-headquartered firm also picked up the award for best in sector among utilities companies.

This is the third year in a row the Spanish utilities giant has taken home the award for best overall investor relations (large cap).

In the small to mid-cap category, two German firms took home the other big awards of the night: HUGO BOSS won for best overall investor relations while Oliver Stratmann of Lanxess was named best investor relations officer.

These companies were joined by the best of the European investor relations community for a black-tie gala dinner and awards ceremony at 8 Northumberland Avenue in central London, hosted by comedian Paul Sinha.

Unlike past years when a few firms picked up multiple awards, this year saw only a small number of companies win more than one trophy. As well as the three awarded to Iberdrola, German chemicals giant BASF won two awards: best in the materials sector and best IR website in the large-cap category of the awards-by-nomination section.

Finnish pulp and paper company Valmet also took home two awards – both in the awards-by-nomination section: best IR website (mid-cap) and the rising star award for the company’s director of IR, Calle Loikkanen. It was recently announced that Loikkanen would be moving to a new firm at the end of August.

In fact, the 28 awards given out on the night were shared by 24 different companies from across Europe. The winners of the awards for best overall investor relations and best investor relations officer – as well as the best-in-sector categories – are all voted for by the investment community.

The winners in the awards-by-nomination section are voted for by a panel of judges, this year made up of: Mike Allen, head of research at Zeus Capital; Claire Berthier, fund manager at Trusteam Finance; Heinrich Ey, co-CIO for European and German mid/small cap at Allianz Global Investors; Caroline Shaw, head of fund and asset management at Courtiers; Francesca Suarez, sustainability analyst at Mirova; Edouard Vecchioli, co-founder of Parus Finance; Gervais Williams, senior executive director at Miton Group; and IR Magazine senior reporter Garnet Roach.
