ESG – Coming in from the fringe with BNP Paribas: Ticker 104

‘[Twenty years ago] investors talking about sustainability were essentially seen as freaks. Today, those risks we were warning about have come true’

If you missed the news, ESG investment is becoming increasingly important for investors. A recent BNP Paribas survey shows 75 percent of asset owners and 62 percent of money managers holding 25 percent or more of their investments in funds incorporating ESG. That’s a major jump from a previous 2017 survey which pegged those numbers at 48 percent and 53 percent, respectively.

An investment philosophy once on the fringe has gone mainstream. This episode of The Ticker podcast features sustainable investment veteran Adam Kanzer, head of stewardship for the Americas region at BNP Paribas Asset Management. In this wide-ranging conversation with host Jeff Cossette, Kanzer talks about why the fringe has gone mainstream, why our disclosure regime needs a rethink, the unique power of investment managers – as fiduciaries – to prompt institutional change, and what people in his line of work want from IROs.
