Is a stock symbol a simple ID or part and parcel of a company's brand? And if a company ticker is instantly recognizable, should it ever change?
An informal poll asked several people what stock symbol Disney uses on the NYSE. Answers included WDC, WLD and, according to one wag, GFY (after the Disney character Goofy). Some knew the correct symbol was DIS but nobody guessed DCQ, its other ticker. Despite the poll's unscientific nature, it does suggest that firms need to give their ticker symbols some thought if they are to be quickly identifiable.
